Working After Retirement

Working for a PSRS-covered employer after retirement can affect the payment of your retirement benefits. In most cases, if you work for employers not covered by PSRS, or as an independent contractor in accordance with IRS guidelines, these rules do not apply.

Please note however, that if you work for a third-party provider such as an employment or staffing agency, or as an independent contractor in a substitute teacher role, or in any other position normally requiring a certificate issued by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), the record-keeping requirements and limits on hours worked and salary earned detailed on this website do apply.

To continue to receive your monthly retirement benefits while working at a PSRS-covered employer, you must:

  1. Terminate all pre-retirement employment
  2. Maintain a PSRS Member Work Record of your part-time or temporary-substitute work
  3. Stay within the limits on hours worked and salary earned

If you don't follow these rules, you will be required to reimburse PSRS for all retirement benefits paid while ineligible, including funds in a PLSO distribution, and pay contributions that would have been required.
