PSRS/PEERS* Growth in Assets

As of December 31, 2023

Asset-Growth

The Board of Trustees of the Public School and Education Employee Retirement Systems of Missouri (PSRS/PEERS) is charged with the responsibility for investing the assets of the Systems in a manner consistent with the fiduciary standards set forth in the ‘prudent person’ rule.  To that end, the Board has adopted the following principles to guide all investment-related decisions:

  1. Act in the exclusive interest of the members of the Systems,
  2. Maximize total return within prudent risk parameters, and
  3. Preserve the long-term purchasing power of the fund.

The investment portfolios of PSRS/PEERS represent all contributions to the plans, from members and their employers, as well as all net earnings on these assets.  These funds are held in support of both current and future liabilities.

The total assets for the combined Systems stood at $56.0 billion as of December 31, 2023, compared to $55.0 billion at the beginning of the 2024 Fiscal Year (July 1, 2023).  The long-term growth in assets since the inception of PSRS in 1946 and PEERS in 1965 is shown in the graph above.

*Effective July 1, 2013 all assets are held in the Missouri Education Pension Trust (MEPT) for the exclusive benefit of the Public School and Education Employee Retirement Systems of Missouri.
