retiree working after retirement in a school officeA Working Retiree

Working for PSRS/PEERS-covered employer after retirement can be beneficial for you and your employer. However, retirees working for covered employers are subject to work limits in order to continue receiving benefits.

Work reported for you by your employer can be viewed in Web Member Services. Keep in mind, there may be a delay between the time of your work and when your employer reports payroll to us, so you may have worked more than what is shown.

If you exceed a limit that applies to you, you will forfeit at least one monthly benefit payment.

When your employer reports to us that you are working after retirement, we will send you information regarding your limits for the school year. We will also send you a form on which to track your work.

  • PSRS Retirees

Work limits apply to PSRS retirees working:

    • Directly for a PSRS-covered employer (includes K-12 school districts and community colleges)
    • For a third-party provider or as independent contractor in positions that require a DESE-issued certificate while performing duties at PSRS-covered employers

If you are a PSRS disability retiree under age 60, visit our Disability Retirement page for the guidelines that apply to you.

  • PEERS Retirees

PEERS retirees who work part-time or on a temporary-substitute basis for covered employers are subject to a 550-hour per school year work limit in order to continue receiving benefits.

Work for employers not covered by PEERS, or as an independent contractor in accordance with IRS guidelines, is not limited and will not affect your benefits.
