Volunteering After Retirement
Many PSRS/PEERS retirees choose to give back to their communities by donating their time and talents. If you’re retired and considering volunteering for a PSRS/PEERS-covered employer, keep the following rules in mind.
- Volunteering for PSRS/PEERS-covered employers is allowed without limits, if you do not receive compensation. This means no salary, stipend, or other payment for your service.
- However, if you receive any form of pay — even a small amount — it may count as employment and could trigger work limits. To stay in compliance, confirm with your employer that your role is truly unpaid.
Important: If you are also working after retirement for the same PSRS/PEERS-covered employer where you volunteer, the rules change. Your volunteer and paid roles must not cover the same duties. If they do, the volunteer hours count toward your post-retirement work limits.
