Planning Your PSRS/PEERS Retirement: Key Dates and Steps

compass pointing towards retirement

Knowing when you can retire and how to apply ensures you receive the benefits you’ve earned without delays. Here’s what you need to know about determining your retirement date and completing your application.

When Will Your Retirement Start?

You can begin retirement after meeting these three requirements:

  1. You reach early or normal retirement eligibility,
  2. You properly terminate your PSRS/PEERS-covered employment, and
  3. You submit your Service Retirement Application.

Once everything is complete, your retirement will start on the first day of the following month.

Apply for Service Retirement

By law, your application must be submitted online or postmarked before your retirement date.
Example: If your retirement date is July 1, apply by June 30.

We recommend submitting all required information and documentation at least three months before your retirement date.

If you plan to reinstate or purchase service, all applications, verifications, and payments must be completed before your retirement date. This process can take weeks to months. Start early! The same applies to tax-deferred rollovers.
