Purchases and Reinstatement
Purchasing or reinstating service can increase your benefit amount or help you retire earlier.
- You earn service for each year or partial year you work.
- Your total service at retirement is one of the factors used to determine retirement eligibility and calculate your retirement benefit.
- All members are eligible to purchase some type of service before PSRS retirement.
Applications for most service purchases are found on this website. Because of complex eligibility requirements, applications for a few types of service purchases, transfers and recognition of service with other Missouri educational retirement systems are not online. Contact us to obtain information about these transactions, or request a copy of any purchase application.

Reinstating service can increase your benefit amount or help you retire earlier. If you have previous PSRS service you forfeited by taking a refund of your contributions and interest, you can buy back, or reinstate, all or any portion of the service. You should receive information regarding service you are eligible to reinstate when you establish your PSRS membership. If you do not, please contact us. Typically, a reinstatement is less expensive than other service purchases. Payment is due prior to your PSRS retirement date. If you pay a portion of the reinstatement cost, you receive proportional service based on the payments you make.
