Seminars and Counseling
Pre-Retirement Planning Seminars are geared to members who are within five years of retirement but all members, as well as their guests, are welcome to attend. Seminars are held throughout the year at various locations across the state. A schedule of seminars is available.
If you are nearing retirement and would like pre-retirement counseling, we recommend that you first attend a Pre-Retirement Planning Seminar. It will provide you with a thorough overview of the issues important at this stage of your retirement planning. Feedback from participants has shown these seminars to be beneficial.
When you attend a seminar, you receive personalized retirement information including benefit estimates based on information you provide when you register. During the seminar, topics covered include:
- Retirement eligibility,
- Calculating benefits,
- Review of the Benefit Estimate form,
- Reinstating and purchasing credit,
- Benefit plans,
- How and when to apply for retirement benefits,
- Working after retirement,
- Social Security, and
- Health insurance after retirement.
Registration is required to attend a seminar, so we can prepare your personalized retirement information packet. Seating for each seminar is limited, and we cannot accept registrations after the registration deadline. You can register online by logging into your personal account or by calling (800) 392-6848.
Individual Counseling Sessions are scheduled each business day for members who are visiting the PEERS office for a very specific reason (filing forms or applications, making payments for reinstatements or purchases of credit), or for those who have a unique situation that would be better addressed with an individual counselor.
Walk-ins are welcome, but we suggest calling the office to make an appointment so that we can prepare a personalized packet of information for you. Call our office at (800) 392-6848 to set up an individual counseling session.
Please bring the following items to your counseling session:
- A photo ID to confirm your identity,
- A photocopy of your birth certificate to verify your date of birth,
- A photocopy of marriage license/certificate if married, and
- A voided check (if you are filing for retirement).
Addresses, dates of birth and Social Security numbers of beneficiaries may be needed.
Web Counseling Sessions are available to all members who would like to meet one-on-one with a retirement counselor without the drive to Jefferson City. You can attend a web counseling session at any computer with a high-speed internet connection, and a web cam, if you want your counselor to see you during the counseling session. You can see and speak with a counselor and share documents during the session.
